Why Nunavut Needs a Public Inquiry Into Uranium Mining. Nunavummiut Makitagunarningit Position Paper (June 29, 2010) This position paper was released by Nunavummiut Makitagunarningit in 2010. It was released following the submission of a petition to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut by Nunavummiut Makitagunarningit, calling for a public inquiry into uranium mining in Nunavut.
Makita Responds to the GN’s Decision to *not* Hold a Public Inquiry into Uranium Mining. Nunavummiut Makitagunarningit Media Release (August 31, 2010) This media release was Nunavummiut Makitagunarningit’s response to the Government of Nunavut’s decision to hold a “public forum” regarding uranium mining rather than a public inquiry.
Uranium in Nunavut Review (2011) Prepared for the Government of Nunavut by Golder Associates. This was provided as “independent” background information about uranium mining by the Government of Nunavut during their “Public Forums on Uranium Mining” in 2011. Golder Associates has also been hired to write sections of AREVA’s Environmental Impact Statement, making them hardly independent. Furthermore, the information in this document in often factually inaccurate, misleading and biased in favor of the mining industry. Government of Nunavut Uranium Policy Statement (2012) This policy was the outcome of the Government of Nunavut’s “Public Forum” on uranium mining in Nunavut. It is almost identical to the original “Management Plan Principles” the Government of Nunavut issued in 2007. It also does not seem to incorporate many of the concerns and issues documented in summaries of the public forums, linked below. Makita issued a press release criticizing the Government of Nunavut’s Uranium Policy Statement.
